The Crystal Palace and England defender remains at the Eagles after his proposed Liverpool transfer fell through.
Marc Guehi had even reportedly recorded his Crystal Palace ‘farewell video’ before his proposed Liverpool move was relaxed.
As reported by BBC Sport, Palace reportedly refused to sanction the transfer due to their failure to secure a replacement after target Igor Julio decided to join West Ham United.
This came after Palace head coach Oliver Glasner stressed that “we need to keep Marc to play a successful season” during a press conference on Sunday.
Glasner added: “I know if we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He loves the club and team, he feels the appreciation, and we feel the same from his side. That’s why I have to say we need to keep him.”
Unlike Yoane Wissa and Alexander Isak, Guehi continued to train and play for Palace despite the speculation.
However, the club went as far as to put together a ‘farewell video’ which was ‘leaked’ on social media – although this is unverified.
The supposed farewell video – see below – opened with several clips from Palace’s FA Cup final victory against Manchester City back in May. It then continued to show several highlights, including goals, tackles and interviews from his time at the club.
But Guehi, who is contracted to Palace until June 2026, will remain in south London until January at least.
The England centre-back will return to Premier League action on September 13 when Glasner’s side take on Sunday at Selhurst Park.
Before then, he will likely feature in England’s World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.
Now that Guehi’s proposed move is off, this leaves Arne Slot’s side short in central defence.
Aside from first-choice Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, Slot now has just Joe Gomez and 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni as back-up while Rhys Williams, who spent last season on loan at Morecambe, is out injured.
So, could the Reds dip into the free agent market?
According to the Liverpool Echo, several options are available, although there is no evidence to suggest Liverpool are interested in said players.
Former Chelsea, Everton and West Ham centre Kurt Zouma is currently without a club, having left Saudi side Al-Orobah upon the expiration of his contract earlier this summer.
Meanwhile, ex-Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu is also a free agent after he was released by the Gunners in June.
