MARATHON CITY, Wis. (WSAW) -The Marathon City Fire Department hosted a first aid and CPR training course on Monday.
The class cost $45 to join and lasted for six to seven hours.
Though the class was open to the public, only a few showed up. Wausau’s Girl Scout Troop 246 had a few members participate, as well as one Marathon student.
The local youth learned how to perform chest compressions, use electrocardiograms (EKG machines), and what to do if they find someone who has overdosed.
Marathon Student, Natalia Ortega, said that she was learning these first aid skills as it would help her become a pediatrician in the future. She also said that the skills could help her outside of a future career and that they are important to learn.
“I mean, you never really know what is to come,” Ortega said, “Something could happen that you’d need this knowledge for. And, not many people know how to react in a situation where it’s needed.”
The Girl Scouts from Troop 246 decided to take the class to improve upon skills they have already learned.
Their troop leader said that in each stage of Girl Scouts, they award badges based on a set of first aid skills the girls learn. These skills remain consistent throughout each stage and are relearned to remind the kids of their importance.
The three Girl Scouts who joined the class did so to learn even more ways to help save others, even if it was something they were not required to do.
“This might be hard,” Girl Scout, Ripsi Shebuski said, “but once you get it, you are gonna succeed.”
If you missed out on the Marathon City Fire Department’s CPR course, other classes in the area are still available.
North Central Technical College (NTC) in Wausau frequently holds CPR and first aid classes.
