Maple Syrup Season Sweetens March Across Maine With Local Farm Festivities

March in Maine means maple syrup season, when sugarhouses across the state open their doors to visitors.

During Maine Maple Sunday Weekend, typically held in late March, farms offer tours, syrup tastings, and demonstrations showing how sap is turned into maple syrup. Many locations also host family activities and pancake breakfasts, making it a fun seasonal outing.

Pineland Farms – New Gloucester (about 35 minutes from Portland)

Pineland Farms hosts a week-long celebration called Maple Week, leading up to Maple Sunday. Visitors can explore the sugarhouse, watch sap being boiled into syrup, and sample fresh maple products. The farm also offers demonstrations on tapping maple trees and guided learning experiences about how syrup is made.

Merrifield Farm – Gorham (about 20 minutes from Portland)

Merrifield Farm is one of the closest maple producers to Portland. During maple season the farm opens its sugarhouse to visitors for tours and syrup tastings. Guests can also purchase pure Maine maple syrup and other maple products while learning about the sugaring process.

Parsons Maple Products – Gorham (about 25 minutes from Portland)

Parsons Maple Products is a family-run maple operation that participates in Maple Weekend each year. Visitors can stop by the sugarhouse to see how syrup is produced and sample fresh maple syrup. The farm also sells maple candy, sugar, and other sweet treats made from local syrup.

Balsam Ridge – Raymond (about 40 minutes from Portland)

Balsam Ridge opens its maple operation to the public during maple season with tours and demonstrations. Guests can see how sap is collected and boiled into syrup and enjoy sampling maple treats. The farm also sells a variety of maple products throughout the event weekend.

207 Tappers – Biddeford (about 30 minutes from Portland)

207 Tappers is a popular maple destination in southern Maine. The farm typically hosts large Maple Weekend celebrations that include sugarhouse tours, syrup tastings, and a popular pancake breakfast. Because it attracts many visitors, arriving early is recommended.
