A woman has sparked a heated debate on TikTok after claiming she faced criticism for her “inappropriate” interview attire, as told by the hiring manager. The anonymous jobseeker shared a video of her outfit, which has since stirred controversy and left opinions split on social media. The viral clip, posted under the username heylady_12, featured text stating: “Manager who interviewed me said ‘you dressed up inappropriately for [the] job interview’. What’s wrong with my clothes?”.
With over 90,000 views, the footage has attracted a barrage of comments from viewers chiming in on the dress code dispute. It seems that when it comes to office wear, there’s an expectation to adhere to certain professional standards.
In the video, the woman is seen wearing black trousers and a neutral crew-neck top, a combination some might consider smart-casual. Yet, some viewers suggested that a more formal approach might have been more suitable for an interview context.
One viewer remarked: “Hmm, that’s ok for the office when you get hired. Interview outfits usually are formal.”
Another questioned: “What’s the job you were interviewing for? Like, if it was for a high level position, I think it’s a bit downplayed, but for a regular position – it’s perfect.”
A third chimed in: “Depends what type of job. I’d wear this to work, but never to an interview. It is way too casual for an interview in corporate.”
Another joined the debate, asking: “Yeah, but what’s inappropriate about it? It’s not like she’s wearing a mini skirt and a tube top.”
One person commended the outfit, stating: “It’s work appropriate. Nice shape and structure, modest, natural tones, not overly dressy. I see no issues.”
Someone else added their view: “These comments are funny. She’s wearing slacks and a sweater. It’s clean and professional. A blazer doesn’t land you a job, your interview does. And, if a person is getting a job solely because they wore a blazer, there is a bigger problem here.”
Yet another weighed in: “I don’t think it’s ‘inappropriate’, just a little casual. A buttoned blouse with a blazer would have probably been better, but in my opinion there’s nothing wrong here. You dodged a bullet.”
Others even hailed the attire as “perfect” for an interview, expressing bewilderment at the negative feedback. The discussion progressed as many differentiated between something being “inappropriate” and merely “too casual.”
In a follow-up video, the woman revealed that her interview was for a bank teller role, noting the expected wage was around $20.00 (£14.88) per hour.
When debating what is deemed “inappropriate attire” for job interviews, the focus often falls on overly casual clothing, revealing ensembles, and items that are distracting or potentially offensive.
Typical examples include sportswear, ripped jeans, t-shirts with inappropriate slogans, and excessive accessories. Generally, applicants are advised to aim for professional attire that aligns with the role and the company’s culture.
