Man United get £43m transfer boost after ‘contact’ made as double summer swoop eyed – Manchester Evening News

Manchester United are primed for a huge summer overhaul in several departments. Though the January transfer window is open, it certainly seems that the focus is on preparing for the 2026/27 season with a handful of new signings and a fresh face in the dugout.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick is set to take charge of his first game this weekend and it is a big one as Manchester City head to Old Trafford. Though United have not made any additions this month, it could feel as though they have with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad back available after their AFCON exploits.

With United well-stocked for attacking options, the priority position for recruitment is midfield. Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba are the main names that have been strongly linked with Angelo Stiller, Morten Hjulmand and Joao Gomes just a few alternatives potentially under consideration.

The latter is likely to depart Wolves at the end of the season, following their expected relegation, with one European club very keen to sign him. Strengthening in defence could also become a priority given the injuries those in that position have suffered.

With his contract expiring, Marcos Senesi could become a cost-effective option while Anderson’s Forest teammate Murillo is now under consideration. With all of that being said, MEN Sport has taken a closer look at the latest United transfer rumours and provided a fresh perspective on the updates.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Napoli have made contact for Joao Gomes with the hopes of signing him for next season. Wolves are reportedly demanding £43million (€50m) to sell.

However, their report adds that Gomes’ priority is remaining in England, which hands United a major boost if they opt to pursue his services. Ruben Amorim appeared to be the main driving force behind a potential deal but he has now left the club and thus it remains to be seen whether or not United will remain interested.

MEN Sport says: Gomes would be a great addition to United’s midfield, but he is likely relatively far down on their shortlist.

Past interest in Carlos Baleba and the undeniable ability of both Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson makes them more attractive options, but with that comes a higher asking price. The clear priority is midfield for United, with that likely to be where the majority of funds go.

Even if United bring in one of Wharton or Anderson, Gomes could still yet arrive given how depleted United are in that area and because of the different traits they would bring to United’s midfield.

United could well be hoping Nottingham Forest are relegated to help with their potential double swoop of Anderson and Murillo. The former is a long-term target while the Brazilian centre-back is under consideration by those at Old Trafford, according to The Daily Mail.

Their report adds that Murillo is open to departing the City Ground with United targeting replacements for Harry Maguire. Signing both would likely set United back over £150million with a triple-figure fee wanted for Anderson and Forest hoping to secure at least £70million if Murillo departs.

MEN Sport says: United’s summer business is likely to depend on a number of things with league position arguably the biggest factor.

Having Champions League football again would make a move much more attractive for most, if not all, targets, while Forest being relegated would make exits for Anderson and Murillo far more likely.

There is also likely to be a partnership between those two players which could certainly help when it comes to settling in and playing together. It would be an expensive double swoop for United but one that would arguably instantly improve their squad.
