Man dies following ‘medical episode’ while driving on main road – Liverpool Echo

A man has died after suffering a suspected medical episode while driving. Merseyside Police said officers were called to Longmoor Lane over reports that a beige Ford Mondeo had driven into a parked Mercedes in Fazakerley at around 8am.

The crash caused minor damage but when emergency services arrived the driver, an 83-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers closed the road in both directions as first responders dealt with the incident and the scene has since been cleared.

Police descended on the main road, with the road remaining closed for around two hours before the car was taken away.

The grey Mercedes had been parked near to Kirkdale Cemetery at the time. A cordon was put in place before the westbound carriageway was reopened.

After the car was recovered by officers, the eastbound carriageway was reopened to traffic.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has passed away and they are being supported by specially trained officers.

“It is initially believed that he suffered a medical episode, and that no other vehicle was involved in the incident apart from the parked car.

“However, we are carrying out enquiries to ensure this is the case, and we are investigating the circumstances of this collision.

“With this, I would appeal to people who were in the area this morning who may have witnessed this, or have dash camera footage of the incident to please contact us.”

If you have any CCTV or dashcam footage or information about this incident, please contact Merseyside Police social media desk via X @MerPolCC or on Facebook ‘Merseyside Police Contact Centre’. You can also report information via the force’s website: orlo.uk/GMIOI or call with reference 201 of 11 October.

Alternatively, contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or via their website here: orlo.uk/uMaZU In an emergency always call 999.
