WASHINGTON (TNND) — Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani doubles down on a promise that he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he comes to the city.
“It is important that New York City is in compliance with international criminal law,” Mamdani said in an interview with The New York Times.
Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., pushed back on Mamdani’s comments, saying that New York City doesn’t have jurisdiction to do that.
He told the newspaper that Mamdani’s proposal was “simply unrealistic.”
Mamdani said during an interview with Mehdi Hasan last year that he would arrest Netanyahu if he came to New York City.
“As mayor, New York City would arrest Benjamin Netanyahu,” Mamdani told the MSNBC host. “This is a city that our values are in line with international law. It’s time that our actions are also.”
Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire deal last week and the Israeli hostages that were alive were released. Palestinian prisoners were also released.
Mamdani said he hopes that the ceasefire deal will hold and that peace will be delivered.
“I also know this news brings solace to millions of New Yorkers, who’ve felt the pain of the past few years,” he wrote on X.
“We have watched as our tax dollars have funded a genocide. The moral and human cost will be a lasting stain and requires accountability and real examination of our collective conscience and our government’s policies. The responsibility now lies with those of us who believe in peace to make sure it endures, and that it is just.”
