Gardai have seized almost €185,000 worth of suspected fake €50 notes during a major operation targeting organised crime in Dublin 8 . Officers from the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau raided a property on Friday night, uncovering a stash of 3,695 suspected counterfeit €50 notes with a potential value of €184,750.
The find is will now be examined by experts in the Document and Handwriting Section of the Garda National Technical Bureau. No arrests have yet been made and investigations are ongoing. Gardai warned that the massive haul of suspected bogus cash could have caused significant financial damage to retailers in the run-up to Christmas. They added that business owners should be particularly mindful if someone is attempting to pay for an inexpensive item with a large note in an attempt to get a large sum of change in real money. In a stark warning to the retail sector , gardai urged business owners and staff to be on the lookout for counterfeit notes, stressing that fake notes of all denominations are currently in circulation. They advised anyone who encounters a suspected counterfeit note to retain it and contact gardai. The seizure is part of ongoing operations against criminal groups involved in producing and distributing counterfeit cash, including Operation DECOY, a joint European effort to stop fake currency being moved through postal networks.
