President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed speculation that he may seek a third term in office, insisting that his presidency will end with the current tenure in line with the country’s two-term constitutional limit.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting with Singapore’s President, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, on his three-day state visit, Mr. Mahama said his absence from the 2028 ballot would free him from political pressures that often drive overspending in election years.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections, and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” the President declared.
He criticised the recurring pattern of incumbent governments breaching fiscal safeguards to secure electoral advantage, saying such practices had repeatedly deepened Ghana’s economic crises.
President Mahama’s remarks come in direct response to claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he is quietly positioning himself for a third term.
The President also pointed to what he described as significant economic gains under his administration since returning to office after a victory in 2024.
He cited declining inflation and interest rates, as well as the recovery of the cedi, as evidence that his government’s policies were stabilising the economy.
The bilateral discussions in Singapore, meanwhile, focused on strengthening trade and investment ties between the two countries.
