A MAERSK executive has been appointed to a senior environmental role with the World Shipping Council.

Simon Bergulf, Maersk’s Europe group representative, is to take over as WSC vice-president, environment and climate in April, succeeding Bryan Wood-Thomas.

Mr Bergulf will also lead and manage WSC’s Brussels Office.

According to the WSC, Mr Bergulf is currently Maerk’s group representative for Europe, having worked there since 2017.

Before joining Maersk, he held regulatory roles at Danish Shipping.

“Simon has spent many years working on shipping regulation and climate policy,” said WSC president & chief executive Joe Kramek.

“As former chair and currently vice-chair of the WSC Environment & Climate Council he understands both the opportunities and the practical challenges of driving a more sustainable liner shipping industry,

“Our members have collectively invested over $150 billion in new ships designed to run on green fuels, and decarbonisation remains a top priority for WSC.”

Mr Bergulf said he was excited to join WSC in a role “focused on decarbonisation, environmental stewardship and the protection of marine life”.

“Liner shipping has already made major commitments, but reaching net-zero requires clear global rules, investment in new fuels and infrastructure, and close cooperation across the supply chain,” he said.

“I look forward to working with WSC members, policymakers and partners to help navigate that challenge.”

Mr Bergulf succeeds Bryan Wood-Thomas, who has served as vice-president, leading WSC’s environment and climate work since 2008.

“Bryan has played a central role in shaping global regulations on decarbonisation, air quality, chemicals, and protection of marine life,” Mr Kramek said.

“He has been a leading and respected voice for the liner sector in environmental and climate discussions around the world.

“We are deeply grateful for his many years of leadership and service.”
