NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brock Purdy is the highest-paid player in 49ers history, but the quarterback has not changed at all, according to fellow signal-callers Mac Jones and Tanner Mordecai.
Both of Purdy’s backups were first-time participants at Tight End University in Nashville last week, an annual event hosted by George Kittle, and they spoke to NBC Sports Bay Area about the franchise quarterback.
“He hasn’t changed at all,” Jones said. “We went out and played golf, and he’s going to be the same guy. He’s someone I can learn from and grow with.”
Mordecai, who is entering his second season with the 49ers, had a very similar assessment of Purdy.
“Brock is salt of the earth,” Mordecai said. “Super genuine dude. And money would definitely never change him.”
Jones has known Purdy for some time as they trained together in Jacksonville, Fla., with the same quarterback coach during the offseason.
Former 49ers quarterback Sam Darnold, who was Purdy’s backup in 2023, had a successful season with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024 before signing a lucrative contract with the Seattle Seahawks in 2025, and Jones hopes to follow that path.
The Alabama product has taken notice of Purdy’s preparation habits. The former first-round pick believes the process is what has separated Purdy from other young NFL quarterbacks.
“He’s very meticulous about how he goes about his work,” Jones said. “I’ve known him for a decent amount of time, but to really get close with him and see how he operates and he’s Type-A, very organized and he wants everything to be perfect.
“That’s why he’s had success in this league. He’s done it consistently and he’s really striving to do it again. He’s not just satisfied because of a couple of good years. He wants to great every day, so it’s pretty cool.”
Mordecai also has taken note of Purdy’s preparation for practices and games. The undrafted free agent has been taking Purdy’s example to heart to hopefully bolster his efficiency on the field.
“I think it’s interesting just seeing him Saturdays before the game, how well he knew the gameplan,” Mordecai said. “I think there’s a lot of stuff he does on his own outside the building and obviously it translates to the field and it’s definitely something I learned from him.”
Of course, there is no lack of fun when it comes to hanging out in the quarterback room. Ultimately, the group enjoys each other’s company.
“[Purdy is] really consistent, loves football,” Jones said. “We’ll have a good time out there. He’s pretty serious when he’s out there, but he still cranks up a little bit with some laughs and jokes. I really like it.”
