Commuters have been left in a state of chaos this morning after a major motorway remained closed. The M5 in Devon, going northbound between J27 for Tiverton and J26 for Wellington was due to open at 6am after roadworks.
But in very British fashion, they’ve overrun and will remain closed for longer. This has seen National Highways issue an urgent warning, as well as a rather long diversion – featuring a nine-mile drive.
A spokesman said: “The M5 in Devon is closed northbound between J27 (Tiverton) and J26 (Wellington) due to a planned roadworks that has overrun its agreed completion time of 06:00 due to an issue with the tarmac.
Contractors have advised that the tarmac is taking time to set and is not safe to use at this stage.”
Road users are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs:
If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.
