Longford Oireachtas members ‘delighted’ as new special class confirmed for Longford school

Two Longford Oireachtas members have said they are delighted that Longford is set to benefit from new class for children special educational needs.

Longford is receiving another class for children with special educational needs for St Dominic’s National School Kenagh in the Ballymahon area as part of the third tranche of announced funding.

So far this year additional classes have been approved for Sacred Heart Primary School in Granard and Scoil Mhuire National School in Newtown Forbes.

Longford Fine Gael TD Micheál Carrigy said the additional tranche three funding continuing to support these classes are key to continue to support children with special educational needs and their families in Longford.

“I am delighted to see this news for students, teachers and parents in Longford. It is another important step in ensuring that children with additional needs can continue to learn and thrive in an inclusive setting in their school settings across Longford.

“This will have a positive impact on children with special educational needs and their families here in Longford.

Deputy Carrigy said Budget 2026 provides over €3 billion in funding for special education and this increased funding will allow schools recruit additional teaching and SNA staff to provide another 3,000 new special class and special school places.

Fianna Fáil Senator Joe Flaherty has also welcomed the confirmation of an additional special class for Kenagh National School.

He said a further 38 classes across 17 counties have been sanctioned today, bringing the number approved so far this year to 301, with additional decisions expected in the weeks ahead.

Senator Flaherty said, “These classes will make a real difference for children and their families by providing tailored supports closer to home, while also helping schools manage increasing needs.

“It is important that every student has the opportunity to learn in a setting that recognises and responds to their individual needs. Expanding provision within our own communities is a key part of that.”

“So far this year additional classes have been approved for Sacred Heart Primary School in Granard and Scoil Mhuire National School in Newtown Forbes.”

Senator Flaherty said building this extra capacity gives families greater confidence and ensures schools are better equipped to support their students.

“I will continue to work closely with the Minister and the Department in the weeks ahead to make a strong case for further allocations for schools across Longford.”

Over the past five years 29 special education classes have opened in County Longford.
