Conor McGregor has been warned he is ‘wasting his time’ by seeking backing from local councils to secure his place on the Presidential ballot.
The divisive former MMA star has openly declared his ambition to contest the Presidency, though it appears extremely doubtful he will obtain the required support for ballot access. McGregor requires endorsement from four of Ireland’s 31 local councils or from 20 Oireachtas members, and despite assertions that he has already secured sufficient backing, this appears highly improbable, reports the Irish Mirror.
Leitrim Councillor Enda Stenson has declared McGregor is wasting his time. Speaking to Shannonside, he said: “In one sentence I don’t think a whole lot of it. I don’t think that Conor McGregor is a suitable candidate as President of Ireland and I think that coming to Leitrim County Council looking for a nomination is a waste of our time and a waste of his time and I just think it’s highly and totally ridiculous.”
McGregor also turned up unexpectedly in Monaghan whilst attempting to secure backing from local politicians. Speaking to Northern Sound, he said: “I am here to rally the people, show support here in the flesh and I’m looking for a nomination to be on the ballot for the presidency of Ireland from Monaghan County Council, this is the beginning of it, we have sent some emails out and we’ve been in correspondence with some councillors, some TD’s, and here we are in the flesh.
“I am getting a lot of support. My points are resonating with a lot of people, and it’s important we get this message out.”
He added: “Listen, for sure, I’m an imperfect man. I am not a politician. I’m a fighter, through and through, and I’m an Irishman, through and through. I’m proud of my nation.
“My nation has been good to me, and I find it my duty to stand up on his behalf, and that is it. I am a good man and those who know me know this, and those who meet me will also know this.”
Former Dublin GAA boss Jim Gavin has been chosen as Fianna Fáil’s candidate for the Presidential Race.
