Liverpool will be hoping to kick-start their season with a win over arch rivals Manchester United on Sunday. Following a solid start with five wins out of five in the league, Arne Slot’s side’s title defence stumbled in the run-up to the international break.
Chelsea earned a last gasp 2-1 win over the Reds before the break. This followed a 97th-minute winner for Crystal Palace a week earlier.
In between was a frustrating defeat in Istanbul as the Reds lost to Galatasaray in the Champions League, their first loss in the prestigious European competition this year. Liverpool will now be aiming to avoid defeat against United, with Ruben Amorim’s side not winning at Anfield since 2016.
With Marc Guehi’s future once again in the spotlight, a rumoured move from Liverpool for Antoine Semenyo gathering pace and Tyler Morton’s comments on Slot, Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest news coming out of Anfield.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed Marc Guehi will leave the Eagles upon the end of his contract next summer. Guehi was on the verge of sealing a £35million move to Liverpool on deadline day, until the move broke down in the final moments.
The Palace chief has now confirmed that he expects the England star to leave south London at the end of the current season.
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year,” Glasner said. “The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, ‘No, I want to make something different.’ And that’s normal.
“And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.”
Liverpool are expected to go back in for the centre-back. However they are likely to face competition from the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich for the player’s signature.
Liverpool are reportedly just one of the clubs currently interested in signing Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo. The Ghana international has impressed potential suitors so far this season with nine goal contributions in seven Premier League appearances, including two goals against Liverpool.
According to talkSPORT, Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is a ‘big admirer’ of the player. Hughes, previously of Bournemouth, brought Semenyo to the Vitality Stadium in January 2023 for £10.5m from Bristol City.
Semenyo also has a release clause in his Bournemouth deal, as per talkSPORT. However, it’s unknown just how much the clause is. What is known, is that Semenyo’s value is now set to be close to £75m, meaning Liverpool would have to fork out big money yet again on their forward line to land the forward.
Former Liverpool midfielder Morton made a switch to Lyon this summer after 17 years with the Reds. Over the Premier League-winning 2024/25 season, Morton played just 253 minutes across five appearances.
However, he has been drawing plaudits for his performances in France. Speaking to SPORTbible about his Anfield exit, Morton opened up with his relationship with Slot, revealing the Dutchman had doubts over how well he could “trust” the midfielder.
“I think he thought I was a good player, but I don’t feel the trust was there as much. In my opinion, the limited opportunities were down to trust and not ability,” he said. “When I got my opportunity in the cup, I felt like I played well. That’s all I could say.
“I stuck at it, stayed focused, got through to the end of the season and played in the under-21 Euros, which was amazing.”
He added: “I had a few conversations with him (Slot) during the season. A lot of footballers can be bitter about not playing and let their egos get in the way, but I’m not that type of lad.
“I personally disagreed with the limited amount of game time I got last season, but that was out of my control. I did everything I could. I played for the under-21s when a lot of players wouldn’t. I did everything in my power to stay fit and mentally focused for when my time came, and I still got limited opportunities.
“I just wanted to play. I don’t think I was asking for too much, even if it was coming off the bench in the Premier League…anything, to be honest.”
Morton cited a tie against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last season as a turning point in his Liverpool career. It appears Morton’s mind was swayed after young James McConnell was picked to start over over the 22-year-old.
Morton added: “I think the PSV game – when I had to keep my head fully – was difficult. It was a dead rubber match, they’d already gone through in the Champions League, and I didn’t start That’s when pure frustration kicked in.”
