Liverpool have announced the signing of Alexander Isak in a British transfer record fee.
The Sweden striker’s future has been a saga for the past month after he made it clear to Newcastle he wanted to leave the club, claiming the Magpies broke promises regarding a new contract, and the trust was lost.
Liverpool first lodged a £110million bid a month ago, but Newcastle swiftly rejected the offer, standing firm on a £150m price tag.
However, on deadline day, the transfer has finally happened and Isak is a now a Red after his £125m transfer was announced.
In a statement, Isak, 25, said: “It’s been a long journey to get here but I am super happy to be part of this team, this club and everything that it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and really looking forward to. I’m happy it’s done and…getting back out there.”
Isak travelled to undergo his Liverpool medical on Monday morning, with personal terms already agreed.
The Magpies have released just a 37-word statement announcing the exit of Isak to Liverpool – and did not thank him for his services which is the usual protocol.
Newcastle’s statement said: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
