Perth’s Lions Eye Institute is set to be transformed by a massive $14.1 million redevelopment that will allow it to treat significantly more patients.
Managing director Glen Power said the work marked the first major redevelopment in 30 years for WA’s biggest ophthalmology provider.
The institute’s theatre complex in Nedlands will be completely redesigned and the size of its two theatres increased.
The upgrade, designed by architects Hames Sharley, will also allow more paediatric patients to be treated.
“This redevelopment represents a significant milestone in the institute’s history, as we continue to invest in the future of eye care,” Dr Power said.
“By modernising this complex, patient facilities will be made more comfortable and efficient, with new reception and waiting areas, new ophthalmic testing areas and shared facilities.”
Dr Power said the institute was set to double the number of patients it treats, which currently sits at around 80,000 outpatients a year and around 3600 admitted each year for surgical procedures.
Construction will start this month, with new surgery clinics expected to open next year and new operating theatres to be completed by early 2027.
Lions Eye Institute has been at the forefront of global vision research since it first opened 40 years ago.
