Pierre Poilievre, known for a confrontational and populist style, has made several controversial attacks throughout his career, often directed at individuals, institutions, and the Liberal government’s policies. So when the political party leader says “war on woke,” what job is that doing? Because psychologically that line is ambiguous threat signalling. It’s vague enough to deny, menacing enough to land, and powerful enough to activate an audience without naming an action. This is textbook Stochastic intimidation — language that doesn’t command violence, but licenses it emotionally. Notice the structure: First dehumanize the target, then claim victimhood, then introduce mortality adjacent language, no instructions, just implication. Why? Because implication recruits the audience to finish the thought for you. That’s behavioural efficiency. This message wasn’t for the people he insulted, it was for the people applauding. It says, ‘I can say this, you’ll cheer, and nothing will happen to me.’ It’s a power test and the applause is the answer.
