Oil pipelines are only “white elephants” if private funding is not secured and government policies sabotage private investors seeing their project through to completion.
There is a reason why private investors are fleeing Canada and investing elsewhere. Who is going to invest multi-billion dollars on a project that is stymied by government policies like energy emission caps, group rights to veto, or regulations that require a ridiculous amount of time and effort to conform to?
If the government gets out of the way, then private investors can build the pipelines that will mean many billions of dollars in revenue for Canada. In turn, this means less (or no) taxes, infrastructure projects like new hospitals and roads can be built, and the cost of living goes down for our citizens.
Considering almost everything relies on fossil fuels for development, including solar and wind-based energy production, this industry will be relevant for many years to come.
Oil pipelines are hardly “white elephants.” They are more like “golden elephants” that can lead us to prosperity.
