Editor: Jonathan Karl of ABC News has been the best chronicler of the Trump phenomenon since June 16, 2015 (Donald’s 69th birthday), when he and Melania descended the golden escalator at Trump Tower in Manhattan thus announcing his candidacy for president of the United States. In his writing, Karl holds Trump to a measure requiring the now second-term president to be, as George H.W. Bush might say, “a kinder and gentler” head-of-state. Donald doesn’t fare well in Karl’s estimate. It makes Donald Trump angry that he is not accorded a nobler position in American history.
Since 2020, Jonathan Karl has written four major tomes on Trump’s fulfillment of presidential responsibility. They describe apace his leadership of this nation; in order, they are: “Front Row in the Trump Show” (2020), “Betrayal” (2022), “Tired of Winning” (2023) and “Retribution” (2025).
None of these have pleased Trump, all because Karl thoughtfully criticizes the result: a less democratic country. It is, in fact, as described by Dana Millbank, not yet an autocracy but an anocracy. Trump says Karl is “a third rate reporter.” Such a claim doesn’t resonate. So why then does he continue interviews with Karl? Is he is actually wanting that approval as the ultimate validation? Possibly because he can’t get along without him. Go figure.
Most realize that Karl is going to hold a line with his forceful assertion regarding government “of the people, by the people and for the people;” and Trump never will because it’s so adverse to his controlling nature. It is against the selfish, self-centered, self-serving and, Trump believes, successful life he has lived. The great patriots in America, and they do still exist, will never succumb to that temptation.
