Donald Trump’s determination to take Greenland is reportedly grounded in the Scandinavians’ refusal to award him the Nobel Peace Prize (“Trump links Greenland push to Nobel snub,” Star-Advertiser, Jan. 20). Another typical Trump absurdity.
I have a personal reason to be outraged by these threats against Denmark. I had the good fortune to spend a year in Denmark as a Fulbright Scholar, teaching Danish students. My stay in their country inspired great respect for the Danish people, their democratic institutions and social welfare system, which appeared to me fairer and much more inclusive than our own.
I developed a real respect for the Danish educational system and a government system, which protects human needs. Our family had a baby in Denmark and the medical system seemed more patient and friendly than anything we have seen here in the U.S.
Instead of threatening Denmark, we Americans should be using Danish society as a model we can learn from.
