I WAS surprised to read that Skipton Building Society staff are still not working in the office even for three days per week so long now after Covid. (Back to office plan ‘difficult to justify, Craven Herald, January 22).
I worked at the society for nearly 20 years, 13 as Secretary and General Manager, until I retired in 2006, when we worked in the office for five days a week, and sometimes on Saturday morning too.
When asked what I enjoyed most about work, my answer is always “It was the people.” Indeed, many of us still meet up nearly 20 years later. There were and are great benefits from working in the office rather than being isolated at home even with modern technology. It is so important to work as a team, to share ideas, to help one another, to learn from colleagues, to discuss problems and solutions together as well as just socialising.
It surely makes work more effective and more enjoyable as well as providing a better service to customers.
