Foreign Business Dealings and Congressional Investigations
The federal investigation into Hunter Biden, son of President joe Biden, remains ongoing as of January 13, 2026, focusing on potential tax violations and foreign business dealings, though no new indictments have been issued since June 2024. The investigation has been led by Special Counsel David Weiss, who was appointed in august 2023 to ensure continued independence given increasing political scrutiny.
Hunter Biden initially faced three misdemeanor tax charges in Delaware, filed in June 2024, alleging failure to pay taxes on over $1.4 million in income between 2016 and 2019. The Department of Justice press release details these charges. He pleaded not guilty to all counts. Prior attempts to reach a plea deal in July 2023 collapsed after Judge Maryellen Noreika raised concerns about the scope of immunity offered to Biden from potential future charges.Reuters reported on the judge’s concerns at the time.
Alongside the tax investigation, scrutiny continues regarding Hunter Biden’s business activities in Ukraine and China. Congressional Republicans, notably the House Oversight Committee, have conducted investigations into these dealings, alleging potential influence peddling by the Biden family. The House Oversight Committee released financial records in August 2023 outlining alleged financial transactions. These investigations have yielded numerous subpoenas and testimonies, but have not yet resulted in conclusive evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden.
Since the June 2024 indictment, the investigation has largely focused on gathering additional financial records and conducting witness interviews. Special Counsel Weiss has indicated the investigation is still active, but has not provided a timeline for its completion. NBC News reported in November 2024 that the Special Counsel’s office is pursuing additional lines of inquiry related to potential unreported foreign income. no further public charges have been filed as of January 13,2026.
