That candidate is Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who was the first known second interview the Raiders had, which indicated he was a finalist.
As other candidates have come and gone, Evero has quietly remained in contention and ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that Evero is still very much in the mix.
Fowler also gave some details on Evero’s interview, saying the Panthers coach gave a “detailed QB/offensive plan” during his meetings with Las Vegas.
“Eyes on Klint Kubiak for the Raiders job, but Panthers DC Ejiro Evero is still in the mix there. Some candidates have been eliminated but he has not,” Fowler said. “He conveyed detailed QB/offensive plan in in-person meeting with Raiders. Raiders regime and Evero have Denver ties.”
All indications have been that the Raiders are leaning toward an offensive-minded head coach, which makes sense considering the team is going to draft Fernando Mendoza.
Evero having a sound plan was crucial for him, and apparently that plan was good enough to separate himself and become a finalist.
Evero is no doubt qualified for the job. He’s a two-time defensive coordinator, spending one year with the Denver Broncos and three years with the Panthers. Evero’s NFL coaching journey began all the way back in 2007.
Now, with Webb having withdrawn his name from consideration, it would appear that Kubiak is the last form of competition Evero has, as the rest of the candidates who secured second interviews with Las Vegas have either withdrawn or taken another job.
The Seahawks play-caller has not yet interviewed for a second time with the Raiders, but that’s expected to happen this weekend.
We believe that Kubiak is the guy the Raiders want given his offensive background, but there is no guarantee he’ll take the job right now, which means Evero is just one step away from landing the gig, barring another candidate entering the mix.
