Kupang, NTT (ANTARA) – The Kupang City Government in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is collaborating with Germany’s Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to develop sustainable waste management technology.

Kupang Mayor Christian Widodo stated in Kupang on Wednesday that support for GIZ for the waste processing installation aligns with the city government’s priority program in tackling the waste problem.

“Currently, the Kupang City Government is implementing a waste management roadmap through an integrated waste disposal site (TPST), so this partnership will significantly support our priority program,” he remarked.

He expressed appreciation for the GIZ Germany partnership — facilitated by the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development (IPK) and the Governor of NTT — for their willingness to support waste management efforts through the procurement of a waste processing installation from Germany.

GIZ is a German federal government-owned company operating in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development.

Mayor Widodo explained that waste disposal sites (TPST) will be built in six sub-districts, each equipped with several processing facilities, so that waste problems can be managed at the sub-district level.

Waste that cannot be processed at the sub-district TPST will be transported to the Alak TPA (landfill) for final filtration, leaving only true residue for disposal.

“The city government will also place waste containers in approximately 1,300 neighborhood units (RT) in Kupang City,” he remarked.

Secretary to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Ayodhia Kalake explained that the collaboration between GIZ Germany and his office has existed for a long time, since the previous administration.

In 2025, his office proposed assistance for establishing a waste processing plant in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), with Kupang City as the priority location.

Kalake emphasized that this partnership is a priority, as Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono has been tasked by President Prabowo to address the waste emergency in Indonesia.

“We also welcome GIZ Germany to explore other collaboration opportunities in other cities in NTT that require special attention,” he remarked.

Senior Urban and Regional Development Advisor for GIZ Germany Ketty Kadarwati praised the Kupang City Government for developing a waste management roadmap that aligns with central government policies.

She stated that GIZ is currently conducting a study to determine the best solution to address the waste management issues at the Alak Landfill.

Earlier, GIZ representatives met with Acting Head of the Kupang City Environment and Forestry Agency Matheos Maahury,7and his staff to discuss suitable technology for waste management at the Alak Landfill.
