Former Kerry star Kieran Donaghy , now the business development manager with PTS Sport, is actively working with Dundalk FC to repair the damage inflicted on their new artificial pitch at Oriel Park following last Friday’s match against Drogheda United. The incident involved flares thrown by a small group of Drogheda fans, which caused scorch marks on the recently installed €500,000 playing surface. One flare also struck a 12-year-old Drogheda supporter, causing burns.
Donaghy, who was present at the pitch’s ribbon-cutting ceremony with Minister for Sport Patrick O’Donovan, expressed his disappointment and emphasized the importance of rectifying the situation swiftly. He stated that the damage is localized and that PTS Sport is collaborating closely with Dundalk to ensure a quick resolution, minimizing disruption to the club and its community. Donaghy highlighted the durability of modern artificial pitches by referencing an incident at Sheffield Wednesday, where a pitch was set on fire by a disgruntled fan. He explained that these pitches are fire-rated, meaning the fire is contained and doesn’t spread, enabling localized repairs. He acknowledged the excitement surrounding Dundalk’s new pitch, noting the community effort involved in its preparation and the wide range of uses it serves, from school games to underage academies. Donaghy emphasized the critical role artificial pitches play in accommodating a significantly higher volume of activity compared to natural grass surfaces, supporting numerous teams and community initiatives. He underscored the importance of government investment in such facilities through sports capital programs, which provide crucial resources for communities. Donaghy also shared his disappointment at the actions of a few fans, stressing that their behavior detracted from the special occasion and tarnished the hard work of many. He praised the efforts of stewards, officials, and fire officials who swiftly removed the flares, minimizing further damage. Donaghy underscored the value of the new pitch to the Dundalk community, emphasizing its ability to host numerous activities and benefit a wide range of users, from children to local teams. He concluded by reiterating his focus on fixing the pitch as quickly as possible and ensuring the community can fully utilize the new surface. Donaghy’s priority remains supporting Dundalk and helping them restore the playing surface. The incident has led to a pause on investment in astro pitches in the League of Ireland by Minister O’Donovan, however, Donaghy countered that they are crucial for sporting and community development
