Khalistani Separatists In Canada Chant ‘Kill Modi Politics’ Slogans Ahead of PM’s G7 Summit

Hundreds of pro-Khalistan activists gathered in Calgary to protest PM Modi’s G7 visit, demanding justice for Hardeep Singh Nijjar and highlighting ongoing India-Canada tensions.

Hundreds of pro-Khalistan activists, estimated at around 500 from 13 groups, gathered at Calgary Municipal Plaza in Canada to protest Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit for the G7 Summit. Chanting slogans such as “Kill Modi Politics” and beating a lion-emblazoned drum, demonstrators voiced anger over Ottawa’s decision to invite Modi, while also demanding justice and recognition for Khalistan.

The protest comes amid heightened tensions between India and Canada, particularly following the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a pro-Khalistan separatist activist. No official statements from the Canadian government or police were reported at the time of writing.

The demonstration, which unfolded on Sunday, saw a large group of Sikh activists carrying banners and chanting slogans that called for justice and condemned Indian government policies. Organisers highlighted the participation of around 500 individuals representing 13 different Sikh advocacy groups.

One protester, speaking to local media, said, “We want the world to know what is happening to Sikhs in India. The invitation to Modi is a slap in the face for the Sikh community in Canada.” The protest remained peaceful, though the use of strong rhetoric and symbolic gestures — such as the lion drum — underlined the intensity of feeling among participants.

The protest is part of a broader wave of Sikh activism in Canada, fuelled by the unresolved killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent pro-Khalistan figure, in June 2023. Nijjar’s death led to a diplomatic rift between India and Canada, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly suggesting possible Indian government involvement — an allegation India has strongly denied.

The Khalistan movement, which seeks an independent Sikh homeland, remains a sensitive issue both in India and among the diaspora. Many Sikh activists in Canada argue that their concerns about human rights and justice are not being acknowledged by the Indian government or the international community.

The Logical Indian believes in the importance of dialogue, empathy, and understanding, especially in situations marked by historical grievances and strong emotions. While recognising the right to peaceful protest and free expression, we urge all stakeholders to prioritise constructive engagement over confrontation.

The complexities of the Khalistan issue and the tensions between India and Canada underscore the need for greater efforts towards reconciliation and mutual respect.
