Graham Greene died on September 1, 2025. He was 73. Greene died in the hospital “with his wife, Hilary, by his side,” TMZ reports. The outlet revealed that his cause of death was given as a “lengthy illness.”
Greene is celebrated for his role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film “Dances With Wolves,” and before his death, he wanted to get in touch with his co-star, Kevin Costner, his rep, Michael Greene, said, TMZ reports. Costner starred alongside Graham Greene in the film, playing the role of Lt. John Dunbar.
The actor’s rep said he wanted to thank Costner “for the representation he gave native people in media over the years,” TMZ reports. His efforts in reaching Costner were unsuccessful. However, Costner learned of Greene’s passing, and he paid tribute to him with a heartfelt post.
Costner posted a video on Instagram on Tuesday, September 2, showing a scene from the film “Dances With Wolves.” In the caption, he reflected on Greene’s immense talent and their time working together.
“A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on ‘Dances With Wolves,’ Costner began his message. “I think of how willing he was to learn the Lakota language. I think of my joy when I heard that his work on the film was recognized with an @theacademy Awards nomination. And I think of this scene in particular, when he was able to establish so much about the relationship between Dunbar and the natives with so few words.”
Costner continued to praise Graham for who he was as a person. “He was a master at work and a wonderful human being,” he wrote. “I’m grateful to have been witness to this part of his lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Graham.”
The comment section of the post has been flooded with comments from celebrities and fans who were eager to share their thoughts and pay their respects to Greene. “This film was the first time I ever heard my language in a movie outside of my family circle. Thank you Kevin. RIP mitȟákȟola,” a comment reads.
“RIP Graham Greene, a trailblazing talent, that gave so much exposure to the Native American artists,” another person shared.
A third comment reads, “It was Dances with Wolves that brought Graham to my attention. What a great actor, he will be missed.”
Other reactions include, “A beautiful Canadian, we are going to miss him and his work,” and “There are films that leave an indelible mark… this is one. To the family and friends of Graham Greene, find comfort in knowing the impact his work had on the world. To Graham, be forever at peace.”
