Nairobi: Chuka University has made a mark on the global academic map after producing one of the top performers in Computing internationally. This is after John Tingoi, a Fourth-year student studying Applied Computer Science, emerged victorious at an international university competition, bringing glory to the Republic of Kenya, the university, and himself.

According to Kenya News Agency, reaching the final of the 2025 Internal (Quant) Championship held in Singapore from September 28 to 30 was more than just a personal achievement to Tingoi but a manifestation of the spirit of Chuka University. ‘Quant’ is short for ‘quantitative analyst’. They use mathematics, statistics, and computer models to analyse financial markets, manage risk, or create trading strategies.

In Singapore, Tingoi competed against nearly 80,000 participants from 142 countries, displaying his excellent skills to the world. He managed to secure the third spot in the finals, proving that impossibility is only a self-limiter. Before reaching the Quant final, he outshone over 9,000 contestants in Kenya to secure a spot among the top 12 global finalists. The competition brought together brilliant minds from across the country, and getting to be named the best was more than an achievement and a confidence booster.

Speaking to KNA, Tingoi recounted the struggles and preparations he underwent before becoming one of the best in the Quant international competition. ‘Preparations began months before the competition; I spent long evenings doing my research, and at times I doubted myself, wondering whether I had the stamina to keep pushing forward, but encouragement from my peers and guidance from my lecturers kept me moving.’

Standing shoulder to shoulder with his competitors, Tingoi sees the achievement as more than a personal triumph. It is a moment of pride for the entire institution, symbolising dedication, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence. Dr. Augustus Nyakundi, a lecturer at Chuka University, had happiness plastered on his face as he expressed his thoughts about the victory. ‘This victory shows that discipline and focus can produce results. We have watched Tingoi grow, overcome challenges, and steadily sharpen his skills. His success validates the efforts of both students and staff in pushing the boundaries of learning,’ said Nyakundi.

Comrades from the university were also overwhelmed with joy and pride after witnessing the victory, monitoring the competition through the internet to see their colleague crowned as one of the best brains the world has produced. ‘As a fellow comrade, seeing one of our own win has been nothing short of inspiring. We share the same lecture halls, the same library and even the same struggles, so watching a fellow comrade rise to the top of such a prestigious competition fills us with immense pride,’ said Pauline Wairimu.

Excellence around the world. This proves that with the right mindset and focus, opportunities are always available. From Kenya to Singapore is a clear message that anyone from any part of the world can make an impact, provided that they focus, work hard, and believe in themselves. Explaining to KNA, James Mbabu, a local resident of Chuka town, expressed his pride in the University after receiving the great news. ‘For many of us in Chuka Town, the news that a student from Chuka University had represented the country in the Quant final was more than just a headline; it was a moment of collective pride,’ said Mbabu.

The journey of John Tingoi is proof to the world that determination, mentorship, and willpower are all that one needs to make a difference. It serves as a reminder that success is earned through persistence and great potential can emerge from any place where passion and hard work converge.
