Kemi Badenoch vows to leave ECHR to ‘protect borders’ if Tories are elected

The ECHR has been blamed for frustrating Britain’s efforts to deport foreign criminals and blocking the Rwanda scheme

KEMI Badenoch last night confirmed the Conservatives will pull Britain out of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Tory leader declared she has come up with an exit plan to “protect our borders” if she is elected.

Lord Wolfson KC’s review said her policy goals, from deporting illegal migrants to protecting veterans, “will be easier by withdrawing”.

The Tory Attorney General dismissed repealing the Human Rights Act, insisting only a full exit would deliver.

He also confirmed there are no barriers in the Good Friday Agreement, the Brexit deal or the Windsor Framework that would prevent Britain leaving.

Ms Badenoch said: “It is time for Britain to leave the ECHR.

“It is clear that it is necessary to protect our borders, our veterans and our citizens. I have always been clear that we should leave the ECHR, if necessary, but unlike other parties we have done the serious work to develop a plan to do so, backed by legal advice.”

She is expected to set out details at the party’s Manchester conference on Sunday.

The ECHR has been blamed for frustrating Britain’s efforts to deport foreign criminals and blocking the Rwanda scheme.

Sir Keir Starmer is against leaving but is ready to change the way the ECHR is applied to enable the Government to deport more foreign criminals.

Meanwhile, Nigel Farage has already promised Reform would quit Strasbourg if in power.

Lord Wolfson concluded international treaties would not block a future Tory government from delivering its promises if Britain leaves the ECHR.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp told The Sun: “The Reform Party has rushed out press releases without thinking. They don’t have a serious plan.

“We Conservatives have a real plan to defend our borders and end illegal immigration, starting with leaving the ECHR.”
