The moment Keith Urban hung up on a radio duo after being quizzed about Nicole Kidman’s sex scenes has resurfaced, showing signs of strain in the couple’s marriage two months before their separation on Tuesday.
The Aussie A-lister’s husband, 57, appeared on Mix102.3 Adelaide’s show Hayley & Max in the Morning in July ahead of a series of shows the country crooner had booked in the city over the coming months.
The interview started lighthearted, but soon became awkward when Keith was asked about his thoughts on Nicole’s intimate onscreen moments with Zac Efron, 37, in the 2024 comedy-romantic film A Family Affair.
“What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes on TV and radio?” host Max Burford asked Urban.
That’s when Keith’s line went dead.
A producer claimed Urban’s “team hung up on us because they didn’t want us to ask that question,” prompting co-host Hayley Pearson to chime Keith “hates us – I knew that was going to happen”.
“I’ve had this feeling…that they don’t like these personal questions at all,” Pearson said.
“He doesn’t like the personal stuff…he doesn’t like talking about his wife… It’s private.”
A source later told People Keith did not hang up on the radio duo and the claims he disconnected the line were simply false.
“Keith did not hang up, period,” the source told the publication.
The insider said Keith is a “very easygoing” interview subject and did not take personal offence to the question.
“He doesn’t host his Zoom interviews. This is a complete nothingburger.”
The resurfaced interview comes as Nicole and Keith called it quits after 19 years of marriage in a shock move, TMZ confirmed on Monday.
Their split, which has rocked Hollywood, comes as multiple sources told the outlet the pair, who share daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14, had been living apart “since the beginning of summer.”
The Babygirl actress is reportedly “holding the family together through this difficult time since Keith has been gone”.
The last few months have spelled trouble in paradise for the stars.
Nicole has been living in the UK without Keith at a mansion formerly owned by pop star Boy George, which reportedly costs her an eyewatering AUD $132,000 per month while filming Practical Magic 2.
The Blue Ain’t Your Colour crooner hasn’t been seen at his wife’s home while travelling across the US and Canada with his High and Alive tour.
Reports suggested Keith has since moved out of the couple’s family home in Nashville and purchased another property nearby.
Meanwhile, Nicole applied to become a resident of Portugal, with Urban’s notable absence from the paperwork raising eyebrows amoung fans.
However, insiders claimed Keith intended to sign the documents, but a timetable clash had delayed the move.
“Keith is scheduled to have an appointment at the visa office at a later date as his tour schedule conflicted with the date that Nicole and their daughters were able to secure while Nicole is currently shooting Practical Magic 2 in the UK,” a source told SkyNews.com.au in July.
Amid uncertainty about whether the pair will opt to divorce, a source said they never see each other and their romance has completely fizzled out after nearly two decades as one of Hollywood’s most loved-up couples.
“There was a lot of love between the two and they might not divorce, but there is a world that they both live where neither of them are in it,” the source told Daily Mail on Tuesday.
“Keith and Nicole have been together for decades and there is a world which they can reconcile, but the way their pairing is now, it is not a couple.”
