The Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority, which serves Charlottesville and Albemarle County, is hosting a public information session Tuesday, Sept. 16 to give residents a chance to learn about the central water line project, one of several major infrastructure upgrades planned to improve the region’s drinking water system.
RWSA will invest more than $300 million over the next five years, according to a news release, to make several water infrastructure improvements, including building five miles of water transmission pipe through the City of Charlottesville. The work, which is scheduled to start later this year and will be completed in two phases, will stretch across the entire city.

In 2021, RWSA started a routing study for the new water line, examining construction challenges, neighborhood and traffic impacts, permits, costs and how the project would align with other city infrastructure. Since 2022, the authority has shared updates through letters, community meetings, its website, fact sheets and briefings for local officials, RWSA said in the release.
The Sept. 16 event will cover the project’s history and scope, construction plans, schedule, safety measures and more.
