JOHESU Blames Federal Government for Healthcare System Disruptions

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) holds the Federal Government accountable for the impact of strikes on Nigeria’s healthcare system, citing the non-implementation of CONHESS adjustments as the primary cause of service disruptions.

The Joint Health Sector Union ( JOHESU ) has placed the responsibility for the disruption of healthcare services squarely on the shoulders of the Federal Government , urging Nigerians to direct their frustrations accordingly. This strong statement, delivered through an interview on Channels Television and monitored by DAILY POST, reflects the union’s unwavering stance on the ongoing issues plaguing the nation’s healthcare system.

The National Secretary of JOHESU, Martin Egbanubi, articulated the union’s position on Monday, clearly stating that the government’s failure to act on their demands is the root cause of the recurring industrial actions that disrupt patient care and create hardships for countless citizens. The core of JOHESU’s grievance centers on the non-implementation of the report concerning the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers. This salary structure is a critical component of the healthcare system, directly impacting the compensation and overall well-being of healthcare professionals. It also determines how many professionals are willing to work in the public health system. By failing to address this, the government, according to JOHESU, is perpetuating a cycle of strikes and service interruptions that are avoidable and damaging to the health of the nation.Egbanubi acknowledged the significant impact of strikes on Nigerian citizens, particularly those who are unable to afford or access private healthcare facilities. He highlighted the severe consequences of these disruptions, including delayed treatment, worsening health conditions, and in some cases, preventable deaths. The union understands the distress caused by the unavailability of essential medical services, the long wait times for appointments, and the emotional toll on patients and their families. This awareness underscores the union’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the problem. The union also emphasized that its members are not immune to the negative effects of the strikes. Healthcare workers themselves suffer from the financial strain, stress, and disruption to their lives caused by these protracted labor disputes. JOHESU has also indicated that they have lost members due to the effect of the ongoing industrial actions. The union views the government’s inaction as a significant contributor to the current crisis, resulting in decreased staff morale and further deterioration of the health system. The continued failure to resolve the issue fuels frustration and anger within the healthcare workforce, making future industrial action inevitable if the government does not take steps to mitigate the situation. This situation creates a lose-lose situation for the public, the government and the healthcare workers. In light of the ongoing crisis, JOHESU is appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to intercede and persuade the government to prioritize the implementation of the CONHESS adjustment. The union believes that constructive dialogue, facilitated by public support, can lead to a resolution that benefits all parties involved, most importantly, the Nigerian public. The plea for intervention highlights the critical importance of a collaborative approach in addressing the systemic challenges within the healthcare sector. JOHESU seeks the support of the public to bring pressure to bear on the government to comply with the union’s demands. This collective effort, they believe, can facilitate a positive outcome and prevent further disruptions to healthcare services. The union stresses that a long-term solution requires a commitment from the government to properly fund and support the healthcare system, including appropriate compensation for healthcare workers. They want the government to show they care about their staff by resolving the salary structure issues that currently exist. The union believes the public can play a vital role in ensuring the government meets its responsibilities and protects the health of the nation
