Mum Jesy Nelson made a huge lifestyle change to offer her daughters Ocean and Story a better future.
The former Little Mix star, 34, gave birth to the twins in May last year – with the tots being born premature at 31 weeks. Just recently, the singer revealed the two little girls have been diagnosed with a condition called spinal muscular atrophy (also known as SMA Type 1).
Since their diagnosis, Jesy has joined other parents of children with SMA to raise awareness of the condition and campaign for the NHS to introduce a simple heel prick test which can detect it shortly after birth.
However, this isn’t the only way Jesy’s life has changed since becoming a mother. As the Romford born and bred singer has now revealed in a podcast interview with Jamie Laing that she took the decision to move to Cornwall before welcoming her daughters in order to give them the best start in life.
She revealed: “Me and Zion decided we wanted to move to Cornwall because we just wanted out babies to just – we felt like they’ve been through all this trauma and we just wanted them to grow up in [a] peaceful setting and just to be around the sea and just live like a kid. So we went to Cornwall.”
The move meant Jesy was six hours away from her mum, Janice White, who was the one who noticed signs that things with the twin babies may not be quite right. Jesy explained: “And, you know, because we’ve moved six hours away my mum wasn’t with me every day. So she, I think, noticed how much it deteriorated.
“And she was looking at them in their little rockers and she said, ‘Jesy they don’t move their leges very much, have you noticed that?’.” Jesy then revealed she told her mum not to compare her daughters to other babies as they were premature – but Jesy’s mum was in insistent. Jesy recalls Janice telling her: “‘I know, Jesy, but I just – something’s not right.'”
It comes ahead of Jesy’s documentary release her Prime Video film, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, is set for release on February 13.
Ahead of the release, Jesy has been candid in interviews about her life lately – including her split from her fiancé Zion Foster, who she shares her daughters with. The pair were together for four years and recently got engaged after welcoming their daughters.
But, it was recently revealed the couple have since parted ways. Speaking in an interview about the split, Jesy revealed: “We have been through such a traumatic experience and for us, our girls are our main priority and our main focus.
“We want to give them the most positive, happy and uplifting time and energy and because we have both been through such a traumatic experience, the energy wasn’t right between us, which is understandable. We are still friends and we are still united in co-parenting our daughters, they are our main focus, that’s all we can do, be the best possible parents we can right now.”
