This January, the Royal BC Museum is hosting a lineup of events and activities that help the public explore their own minds and creativity, while engaging in fun activities.
From mindfulness and magic, to the lost art of letter writing, the museum has something for all ages to enjoy.
The museum is inviting the public to reconnect with nature in their replica of a coastal forest in B.C. All are welcome to slow down and take in the sounds of nature for 30 minutes.
Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat. They can bring their own water bottle and enter the premises 15 minutes early to settle in. Entrance is allowed only with advanced tickets purchased ahead of time.
This session is part of their Mindfulness at the Museum series.
Yoga enthusiasts are invited to join the Natural History gallery for a yoga session set in the forest diorama. The session is led by Natalie Wright from One Yoga Victoria. The 45 minute guided yoga session is suitable for those of all experience levels. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga mat, props and water.
Getting Batty with the Royal BC Museum andNatureKids BC
This free online workshop is organized to provide participants with knowledge on bats, carried out hand in hand with NatureKids BC. Participants can experience bat specimens up close, learn what they do during the winter and engage in fun activities. B.C. is home to more than 15 species of bats and this workshop will teach about the unique traits and abilities of these bats.
Meet the mammoth is suitable for students in Grades 1 – 4. It will teach them about the Ice Age and the woolly mammoths who lived there using images, videos and objects. There will be opportunities for questions and interaction as well.
The letter writing station is a chance to explore a lost art. Participants will be provided with paper, pens, envelopes and even stamps. The event is included with admission to the museum and it is free with membership.
Live at Lunch is a monthly series where the participants can hear from curators, archivists, staff and researchers at the Royal BC Museum as well as from fascinating community members and guests.
This month, the event returns with Fabulous Plants and their Fungal Friends, a speech by Andy MacKinnon, co-author of Mushrooms of B.C., a Royal BC Museum Handbook.
The talk will focus on the combination of plants and fungi and feature B.C.’s lichens, mycorrhizae, fungal endophytes and mycoheterotrophs.
Royal BC Museum – Throughout the galleries (Included with admission or membership)
Visitors of the museum can join self-guided activity stations designed for mindfulness throughout the galleries. They can stop by the mindfulness lounge, write some poetry, meditate, engage in a five senses exercise and enjoy a peaceful journey through the exhibits at their own pace.
The Museum Sage Tour is a self-guided experience that offers answers to common questions through a museum display.
At Magic at the Museum, experience magic performed in an actual Victoria parlour in one of B.C’s oldest homes. Dave Morris, Andrew Brimstone, and special guests will perform sleight-of-hand, mentalism, and more in an up-close setting.
Participants in this competition can design and build Lego robots while exploring real-world themes through research and innovation.
This year’s Unearthed Season invites teams to dig into archaeology and history, uncovering how artifacts and ancient discoveries shape our understanding of humanity.
For this display, local BC First LOGO League teams will present their research projects on how robotics can benefit archaeological discoveries, and showcase their creations.
