James Spader’s Controversial TV Character From 81% RT Show Is Easily One Of His Best Roles

James Spader is a fantastic actor, but his role in this hilarious TV show, which has an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, is easily one of his best. James Spader’s best TV characters include the likes of Alan Shore in The Practice and its spinoff, Boston Legal, as well as Raymond “Red” Reddington in The Blacklist, but there’s another that stands out in his filmography.

However, Spader originally made a name for himself in the world of film. James Spader’s underrated movies are still loved by many, but in recent years, the actor has become well known for one particular TV role. Spader’s performance as Robert California in The Office is stellar, even though he isn’t in the sitcom for very long.

James Spader’s Robert California Was The Office’s Replacement For Michael Scott The Office’s Robert California Replaced Michael, But He Wasn’t Actually Regional Manager

After Steve Carell’s Michael Scott leaves The Office in season 7, the employees of Dunder Mifflin Scranton are left without a boss. For a short time, Will Ferrell’s Deangelo Vickers takes over, but he unexpectedly dies, and after Dwight ruins his chances by firing a gun in the office, a committee is formed to find another replacement.

There are a bunch of wacky candidates, including Catherine Tate as Nellie Bertram and Jim Carrey as the Finger Lakes Guy, but Robert California stands out from the rest. He’s immediately unsettling and weird, but it’s apparent that this character is going to be an interesting and chaotic addition to The Office’s cast.

While Spader serves as Carell’s replacement in The Office, Robert California actually doesn’t take on the role of Scranton’s Regional Manager. The strange new character somehow convinces Jo Bennett (Kathy Bates) to give him her role as CEO of Sabre, and while he visits the Scranton branch frequently, he spends a lot of time down in Florida at the company’s headquarters.

Why Robert California Was So Controversial In The Office Season 8 James Spader’s Character In The Office Was Unpredictable & Odd

Even though Robert California is a controversial character, he is still brilliantly funny. Robert’s characterization is very different for the show, and he changes the dynamics in the office massively. He is unpredictable both in terms of his actions and the things he says. You never know when Robert will suddenly offer a philosophical yet inappropriate story or make a weird comment about someone.

A great example of this is in The Office Halloween episode “Spooked.” Robert learns about each of his employees’ deepest fears and combines them into an unhinged and scary story, but he and his son simply burst into laughter at everyone’s reactions to it. Another good example of Robert’s odd behavior is in the episode “Mrs. California.”

While there are many TV characters who wouldn’t want their wives working with them, the lengths Robert goes to in order to stop Susan joining the Scranton team (and to remain looking innocent) is ludicrous. A lot of The Office fans dislike Robert California because he’s the opposite of Michael Scott, but that’s what works so well about the character.

Robert California Is Easily One Of James Spader’s Best TV Roles Robert California Is A Unique Character For James Spader

What’s so impressive about James Spader’s run on The Office is that Robert Callifornia only appears in 19 episodes (or 20, if you count both halves of the season 7 finale, “Search Committee.”) The original plan was that Spader would only make a brief cameo, but the two scenes he appeared in were such a success, the writers decided to bring Robert California back.

Spader’s stint as Robert California is much shorter, unlike some of his other TV work, but he still steals the spotlight. However, perhaps this is because Robert is such a different character for the actor, at least compared to Alan Shore, for example. James Spader often plays unusual characters who make audiences uncomfortable, but his portrayal of Robert is a whole new level.

There’s no denying that Spader’s timing in The Office is astounding. Any jokes that either involve or are told by Robert differ from the others, but it’d be weird if they didn’t, and if anything, it plays into the weirdness of the character even more. Upon rewatching The Office season 8, it’s hard to say who dominates the screen more-Robert California or James Spader.

This is because Spader slips into the role so beautifully, and it’s easy to forget he’s an actor playing a character. Robert immediately grabs the attention of any room he enters, and we’re all thinking about him long after he leaves it, too. Even The Office characters themselves often wonder about Robert, especially as he seemingly appears out of nowhere at times.

The Office Season 8’s Problems Had Nothing To Do With Robert California There Was Too Much Going On In The Office Season 8

The Office’s seasons 8 and 9 problems are complicated. While there’s no doubt that the show isn’t quite the same without Michael, there is a divide among viewers over whether the later installments of The Office are terrible, or simply just not as good. However, Robert California isn’t a major factor in this. In fact, his presence doesn’t really dampen the atmosphere; it improves it.

The Office season 8 marks a new era for the show. Not only is Michael gone, but there are several new characters being thrown into the mix, including Robert and Nellie. It’s a little jarring, especially as we’ve only just got used to Jo, Gabe (Zach Woods), and the Sabre company.

Plus, the dynamics between the other characters are now very different from the beginning of the show. Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) are having a second child, Angela (Kinsey)is also expecting with her new husband, Andy (Ed Helms) is the boss, and Erin’s (Ellie Kemper) behavior around her ex turns weird, to name a few.

If Robert had joined The Office at a different point, his character probably wouldn’t have worked. Everything is already askew in The Office world, and Robert’s erraticness reflects that. Out of Spader’s 19 episodes in The Office, only a few put Robert at the forefront of the story.

The rest of the time, he is usually a bystander who offers comical, yet unhelpful, remarks about the events playing out. Robert always finds a way to weed his way into any story, though, much like Michael does, too. All of this, though, is thanks to James Spader’s hilarious and iconic performance as Robert California in The Office.
