Irish shoppers react as Christmas tubs on sale 16 weeks early

The summer holidays have barely concluded, but certain retailers are already preparing for Christmas festivities. Brown Thomas launched its Christmas department on August 21, whilst other establishments have begun recruiting seasonal staff for the festive period.

Sharp-eyed customers are spotting early Christmas indicators appearing in Irish supermarkets as well. On Tuesday – approximately 114 days or 16 weeks prior to Christmas – broadcaster Maia Dunphy posted a photograph from Tesco, displaying tubs such as Heroes, Celebrations, Roses and Quality Street already available for purchase, reports the Irish Mirror.

The photograph, shared on X, depicts stacks of these seasonal confections apparently priced at €7. The post rapidly gained traction, accumulating over 85,000 views and sparking an animated discussion in the comments section.

Numerous individuals were appalled by the premature appearance of Christmas merchandise, with one person declaring: “Oooh bloody hell no! Not in September.”

Another commented: “Noticed them 2 week ago yikes! !” A third remarked: “This makes me want to cry… I am still trying desperately to hang on to late summer vibes and daylight. You’ve now given me the fear Maia!”

Someone else quipped: “Yep, I’ve got my mince pies ready and the stockings are hanging up on the fireplace for tomorrow. Only I’m flipping NOT because it’s September and August was just 2 days ago.”

However, the idea wasn’t universally panned. Some commenters defended the early availability, with one individual noting: “So what? There are a lot of people who have to budget and spread their spend for THAT day over a number of weeks. Specially if they only get paid monthly.”

Another chimed in: “We have them all year round here in UK so not seen as Christmas related to the same extent as Ireland. See them in offices to be shared between staff and on reception desks for customers. Also great for trick and treaters. The tins do not have any Christmas references on them.”

A third commenter argued: “Should be available all year round.”

Have you noticed any premature Christmas cheer in your local area?
