Inside Siblings Rivalries On Public Stage – Daily Trust

Sibling rivalry is not a crisis that is new to many. Even the religious books account for some of the most gruesome sibling fights ever known to men. However, in recent times, sibling rivalry has spread far across the corners of the family only to land on social media. Several high-profile Nigerian siblings have taken their disagreements beyond private walls, airing grievances on social media, in interviews, and sometimes through music. In this feature, Weekend Trust examines some of the most talked-about sibling rifts that have played out in the public eye and made headlines.

From the story of Cain and Abel in the Bible, it’s clear that sibling rivalry is as old as time. Brothers and sisters have always argued over power, attention, or simple misunderstandings. But when the people involved are famous, those private fights easily become public drama.

In Nigeria, where fans follow every post and interview, family disagreements among celebrities often turn into nationwide conversations. And over the years, a few sibling clashes have stood out more than others.

Few family disputes in the Nigerian online space have been as prolonged or as public as the one involving Peter and Paul Okoye of P-Square and their elder brother and manager, Jude Okoye. Once known as Nigeria’s biggest pop duo, P-Square’s split has been layered by several dramatic online attacks from each of the brothers.

In 2024, Paul accused Peter of stealing a song titled Winning. Peter responded sharply, insisting the song belonged to him.

In an Instagram post, Peter wrote, “Person no dey thief him own property! For the record, ‘Winning’ was written and composed by @calypso60music and myself. CO-PRODUCED by@goldswarm. They all deserve their credit. And I appreciate them. Just as I said in my open letter three months ago, “Allow me to do my music in peace.” Now that I have a new single out, please allow me to enjoy my new single, WINNING, in peace. Enough of the negativity!”

The feud reached its peak in June 2025, when Peter announced he was cutting ties with his brothers.

In an X post, he wrote, “We are no longer family at this point! Family is blood-related, but the real family is loyalty. Like I said before, don’t let family be the reason you’re drowning in silence. I did – for over 20 years. And it almost cost me everything. But now I know better – love doesn’t manipulate, loyalty doesn’t betray, and family does not steal from you. A family that steals and breaks you isn’t family at all. Real family doesn’t drain you, shame you, discriminate against you, or ignore your pain. My sanity matters. My mental health is a priority. IF IT COSTS MY MENTAL HEALTH, THEN IT’S TOO EXPENSIVE! #iDisOwnThem”

Paul, on the other hand, struck a more conciliatory tone earlier in 2024, asking why being brothers seemed impossible.

In an Instagram live session in August 2024, Rudeboy, aka Paul, said, “Even if we don’t do P-Square, can’t we be brothers? Even if we can’t do music, can’t we be brothers? Like I said, I don’t want to talk much. I didn’t used to talk before. It’s so unfortunate.”

The Edochie family has long been seen as one of Nollywood’s most respected families. But in recent years, tension between actor Yul Edochie and his elder brother, Linc Edochie, came into public view, largely because of Yul’s personal life. When Linc advised him to keep his marital issues off social media, Yul responded angrily

In one of his public posts, he attacked his brother’s credibility for speaking over his marriage.

He said, “Ndi ‘keep your marriage off social media’ kwenu. You wey hide your marriage inside house you no still divorce? Your wife no leave you? Everybody na adviser for social media. Your own life go dey scatter, you no fit fix am. But you sabi advise other people.

He also criticised the idea that airing family matters publicly makes someone weak. He said, “Never castigate your family in public; that’s the sign of a weak person.”

However, in 2025, Yul posted a video on his Instagram page signalling that the brothers had reconciled following their public outrage at each other. The video showed the siblings sharing a traditional Igbo greeting, followed by a warm hug.

Former Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose and his younger brother, Isaac Fayose, have also repeatedly clashed on social media, particularly over political issues and personal disagreements.

Appearing on the Mic On Podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, Fayose spoke about his political disagreements with his brother, revealing that he distanced himself from Ayo Fayose’s support for Governor Biodun Oyebanji, insisting he saw no reason to align with him. He also note

He said, “I disagree with my (elder) brother (Ayo Fayose) because of Ekiti politics. He’s supporting Gov. Oyebanji, and I don’t see why I have to join him to support Oyebanji.”

He further noted that their fight runs so deep that both have blocked each other on their phones.

While congratulating Ayo on his 65th birthday, Issac didn’t hesitate to throw low blows at him in his birthday message, describing him as selfish and cold.

He wrote, “A birthday message to my brother Ayodele Peter Fayose at 65. May God bless your new age. I pray as you enter this new age, the spirit of selfishness in you will disappear and you can be a good man and turn a new leaf.”

Isaac also alleged that his brother Ayo was a backstabber who had forgotten all the sacrifices family members made on his behalf before being in a position of wealth and affluence.

“You betrayed everybody that has helped you in life to be where you are today. You had your birthday yesterday, and none of your siblings from your mother’s side were there; not even your mother. They didn’t invite her; they believe your mother is ‘a pain in the ass.

“The party that gave you a ticket twice to be governor, you betrayed them. You betrayed your political family in Ekiti, your siblings, your mother, even our late sisters,” he added

Though not as widely publicised as entertainment feuds, Senator Ned Nwoko has also had his share of sibling-related controversies. After tensions involving Regina Daniels, Chuks Nwoko, who claimed to be the senator’s brother, accused him of bringing disrepute to the family, ignoring calls, and changing his name from Chinedu to Ned.

In a viral video, Chuks made a lot of claims against the senator, including that he had been unable to reach the lawmaker for years, as Ned had consistently ignored his calls. He further criticised the senator’s attitude, accusing him of hypocrisy for flaunting his law degree online while forgetting his humble beginnings. He also alleged that the senator had refused to pay Regina’s bride price to her father and attacked him for changing his name from Chinedu to Ned.

However, Michael Nwoko, cousin and chief of staff of Senator Nwoko, addressed the issue saying, ‘Chuks is not and has never been a member of the Nwoko royal family. His father hails from the western part of Nigeria, and by every known standard of lineage, tradition, and descent, he has no genealogical or ancestral tie to Idumuje-Ugboko.

Although sibling rivalries are part of human nature, experts say understanding, communication, and fair parenting are key to managing these conflicts.

Speaking to Weekend Trust, a family therapist, Dr Mariam Edem, said that sibling rivalry is normal but becomes a bigger problem when it is not managed from the home. Dr Edem added that rivalry grows stronger when and if parents unknowingly compare their children.

“Rivalry usually starts from a need for attention or a fear of being overlooked. When children don’t feel equally seen or supported, they compete. As adults, that competition can follow them into their careers, relationships, and even public life.

“When a child hears statements like ‘Your brother is better at this or Why can’t you behave like your sister?’, it plants a seed. That seed becomes resentment over time, and if not addressed, it grows into full conflict,” she said.

However, Dr Edem noted that the situation is more dire when involving celebrities, as their public fallouts are intensified by social media and fame:

“Once emotions are high and there is an audience, it becomes harder to step back. People start defending themselves publicly instead of resolving the issue privately.”

For Mrs Happiness Ibe, a mother of three, managing rivalry among her children was once a daily chore. However, she has turned to a calmer system when addressing rivalry among her children.

“My two sons fight over everything, the TV remote, clothes, even who sits in front. At first I used to shout, but I later realised that made it worse. Now, I give them turns, I explain fairness, and sometimes I let them cool off before talking. It’s slow, but it works. They argue less now, and when they do, they apologise faster.”

Twenty-four-year-old Bamidele Akinyemi says he and his elder sister clashed constantly growing up, but learning to understand each other helped. He also believes communication makes the biggest difference.
