MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – One full week into required gun safety courses in all Tennessee schools, and Memphis-Shelby County Schools is making sure to answer any questions parents and students may have.
One way they’re doing this is through events like Friday morning’s Family & Community Forum on Gun Safety Curriculum.
At Dexter Middle School, students gathered with teachers, parents, and community members to learn about the curriculum, ask questions, and hear about the importance of gun safety for kids.
Speeches from law enforcement, medical professionals, and those personally impacted by gun violence emphasized the reality of it.
On stage, Linking Hands 901 founder Marsha Wilson held up t-shirts with pictures of those who have died due to gun violence. One of them was her own son, Sherman, who died 11 years ago in a shooting.
She’s hopeful that speaking about the issue with children can save lives.
“It’s not an easy fix, it’s not a quick fix, but as a community coming together, I think that we can get a lot of these issues resolved,” Marsha told Action News 5.
With gun safety now a required course in Tennessee schools, Dexter Middle School Principal Patrick Certion says he looks forward to continuing conversations about reducing gun violence in Memphis, saying it takes a “partnership” between businesses, schools, and residents to see change in the community.
MSCS says they’ll be hosting more events like this in the near future.
