India’s Amravati Moves Gov Records Onchain with Polygon

The city of Amravati, in the state of Maharashtra, is launching a blockchain initiative with Polygon to move government records onchain.

The project will start by tokenizing land titles, property documents, tax data, and citizen certificates. Transparent, secure, and permanent, this effort could reshape how local governments in India manage and protect public data.

Building Trust Through Blockchain

Amravati’s partnership with Polygon represents more than a tech upgrade. It marks a shift toward transparent governance, where citizens can verify records without relying on paper trails or middlemen. By using Polygon’s blockchain infrastructure, the city aims to create a tamper-proof system that makes it nearly impossible to alter or lose records.

This isn’t India’s first step toward digital documentation. Maharashtra has already introduced digitally signed land record extracts and online Property Cards. However, bringing this data onchain introduces a higher level of transparency and accountability. Blockchain technology ensures that once information is entered, it cannot be changed or deleted — building citizen trust and reducing the risk of corruption or human error.

Globally, blockchain-based record systems are gaining ground. For instance, Sweden’s land registry agency tested a similar model to streamline property transactions and cut costs. If successful, Amravati’s approach could serve as a blueprint for other Indian cities and developing nations aiming to modernize their governance structures.

More About Polygon

Polygon founder and CEO Sandeep Nailwal announced that Polygon is becoming the default blockchain for Flutterwave. This is Africa’s largest payment processor powering companies like Netflix, Uber, Booking.com, Microsoft, and Audiomack. This partnership will enable instant, low-cost stablecoin payments across 30+ African countries, addressing major issues like currency volatility, high remittance fees, and long settlement times that can take days and cost over 8%.

Flutterwave processed $31 billion in transactions last year, and by integrating with Polygon, millions of Africans can now access faster, cheaper digital payments. Nailwal noted that Polygon already handles half of all U.S. transfers of USDC in the $100-$1,000 range, with small USDC transactions on the network rising 141% this year, especially in Argentina and Brazil. The goal is to replicate that success in Africa, unlocking financial inclusion and transforming daily commerce through stablecoins and onchain technology.
