As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has called on citizens to actively support the government’s efforts in driving national development, stating that progress requires collective effort from both leaders and the people.

Speaking at an inter-denominational church service held at the National Ecumenical Christian Centre in Abuja on Sunday, Akume described governance as a “shared responsibility” and urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to building a better future.

This was contained in a statement signed by his media aide, Yomi Odunuga.

The church service, part of events commemorating Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary, drew dignitaries including top government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and religious leaders, the statement noted.

The statement also noted that the event featured Thanksgiving prayers for peace, unity, and progress in the country.

Akume noted that Independence Day is more than a remembrance of history, but a renewal of purpose.

The SGF highlighted the importance of accountable leadership, stressing that the current administration is committed to transparency and integrity.

According to the statement, the SGF said, “Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, our nation is undergoing bold reforms aimed not at temporary relief but at lasting transformation.”

He acknowledged the hardship many Nigerians are currently facing but urged citizens to remain patient and constructive in their engagement with government policies.

“The challenges we face today are deep-rooted, spanning decades.

“But this administration is determined to confront them head-on and deliver enduring solutions.

“These reforms may feel tough at the moment, but the sacrifices being made by Nigerians today are paving the way for economic renewal, stronger institutions, and improved conditions across food, energy, healthcare, education, jobs, and infrastructure,” the statement added.

Calling for national unity, the SGF appealed to Nigerians to rally behind the reform agenda of the Tinubu administration.

“Our challenges are real, but our resilience is greater,” he declared.

“Nigeria has always been a land of ingenuity and determination. This is the moment to rekindle our national spirit, transform challenges into opportunities, and drive forward with hope grounded in action.”

Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, and has since marked the anniversary with a series of national celebrations, including parades, church and mosque services, and official addresses.
