In One Vote Senate Approves 48 Trump Appointees

The Senate floor turned into a battlefield on Thursday, and Republicans walked away with a victory Democrats had been trying desperately to stall. Forty-eight of Donald Trump’s pending nominees were confirmed in one sweeping motion, thanks to Majority Leader John Thune pulling the trigger on the so-called “nuclear option.”

It wasn’t subtle. It wasn’t polite. And it sure wasn’t what Democrats wanted. But after months of delays, stonewalling, and manufactured outrage, Thune made good on his promise to move the nominees forward en bloc. The final tally: 51-47, straight down party lines.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. These weren’t just random back-office bureaucrats. Buried in the package were a handful of key War Department positions — the kind that shape military readiness behind the scenes — along with ambassadorships like Kimberly Guilfoyle and Callista Gingrich. Yes, that Kimberly Guilfoyle. Cue the media outrage cycle in 3…2…1.

Democrats, of course, cried foul. They had spent months blocking nominees that had already been vetted, cleared through committee, and in many cases supported with bipartisan votes. But when it came time for full Senate confirmation? Suddenly, nothing moved. Voice votes and unanimous consent — the normal tools for handling these types of nominations — were off the table. Instead, Democrats played stall ball.

And that’s exactly what pushed Thune to the edge. He didn’t just act out of convenience; he quoted Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s own past words back at him, reminding everyone that Schumer himself once admitted nominees shouldn’t be blocked without a real, substantive reason. The hypocrisy practically wrote itself.

So Republicans moved forward, wielding the nuclear option and clearing out nearly 50 names in one fell swoop. The message was clear: if Democrats thought they could gum up the works until the clock ran out, they were wrong.

But don’t think the story’s over. While Guilfoyle and Gingrich sailed through, one name was conspicuously absent from the victory list: former Rep. Mike Waltz, Trump’s pick for U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Waltz has been a rising star in conservative foreign policy circles, a military veteran with sharp instincts on China and the Middle East. And yet? Democrats managed to shove his nomination back to committee. A tactical retreat, sure, but one that leaves a critical post still hanging in limbo.

The irony is thick. Democrats spent months accusing Trump of leaving posts unfilled, of neglecting the machinery of government. And yet when the chance came to confirm qualified nominees, they slammed the brakes — not because of scandals, not because of conflicts of interest, but because delay itself has become their favorite weapon.

And here’s the kicker: this wasn’t even the endgame. With dozens more nominees still waiting, Thursday’s move was just the first wave. Republicans showed they’re willing to change the rules, break the logjam, and dare Democrats to keep whining about process while America waits for a functioning government.

So now the question isn’t just about the 48 who made it through. It’s about who’s next — and whether Democrats have anything left in the tank besides procedural tricks and angry press releases.

Because one thing is certain: Trump’s nominees are moving, the nuclear option is on the table, and the days of slow-walking confirmations just came to a crashing halt.
