Efforts to restore dialogue between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the government have repeatedly failed. Senior PTI leaders have tried to ease tensions with the military establishment, but the party continues to take a confrontational approach.
The main obstacle is Imran Khan. His intransigent stance prevents any meaningful reconciliation. Senior PTI officials, both inside and outside prison, have quietly urged dialogue. They say the confrontation isolated the party and weakened its political influence. Despite these efforts, Khan refused to consider negotiations with the ruling parties.
Earlier this year, imprisoned PTI leaders publicly supported dialogue. In response, Khan of Adiala jail rejected the proposal. On July 8, he declared: “The time for negotiations is over and announced a nationwide protest movement starting in August. The move took precedence over the more pragmatic approach promoted by senior leaders such as Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
Political analysts say the PTI’s chances of regaining influence remain slim as long as Khan maintains a confrontational posture, particularly against the military. The party’s social networks also continue to target the military, further reducing opportunities for engagement.
Even though the PTI has softened its stance, the military establishment’s distrust of Khan runs deep. His repeated criticisms over the past three years have alienated current leaders and much of high-level institutions.
Some observers suggest that the PTI’s political revival may depend on alternative leadership. Figures like Shah Mehmood Qureshi or Chaudhry Pervez Elahi might be acceptable to the establishment. However, for now, the PTI remains dominated by Khan’s challenge. Its refusal to engage in dialogue leaves little room for reconciliation or political normalization.
