The question before Pakistan today is not political loyalty or partisan rivalry. It is a basic one of humanity, law, and state responsibility: Imran Khan must be given full, transparent, and independent medical treatment without delay.
A state that deprives any prisoner of proper healthcare — let alone a former prime minister — undermines its own moral and legal standing. Regardless of how one views Imran Khan’s politics, his popularity, or his confrontations with the establishment, his right to medical care is not conditional. It is guaranteed by Pakistan’s Constitution, its prison rules, and international human-rights obligations to which the country is a signatory.
Recent reports about Khan’s eye condition and overall health have raised serious concerns. Government assurances that he is “fine” or that procedures were “routine” are not enough. In cases involving detention, secrecy itself breeds suspicion. When family members, lawyers, and independent physicians are denied timely access, the burden of credibility shifts squarely onto the authorities.
Pakistan has seen this movie before. Countless political workers, the denial or delay of medical care has repeatedly turned into a national embarrassment — and, at times, a historical tragedy. Each episode weakens public trust and deepens polarization.
This is not about granting political favors. Allowing independent doctors of Khan’s choice to examine him, sharing medical reports with his family and legal team, and ensuring treatment at a facility equipped to handle specialized care are standard practices in any system that claims to respect the rule of law. These steps would not weaken the state; they would strengthen it.
International scrutiny is already intensifying. Human-rights organizations and foreign observers are watching how Pakistan treats a high-profile detainee under its care. Continued ambiguity only invites damaging speculation and fuels conspiracy theories — none of which serve Pakistan’s interests.
Most importantly, health is irreversible. Eyesight lost cannot be restored through press releases. Damage done through neglect cannot be undone by explanations after the fact. A state that acts too late cannot claim innocence.
Pakistan must rise above political vendettas and momentary power struggles. The measure of justice is not how the state treats its allies, but how it treats its critics when they are at their most vulnerable.
Imran Khan should be given immediate, comprehensive, and independently supervised medical treatment. Anything less would not just be unjust — it would be indefensible.
