Religious engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, who was recently released on bail after being arrested in a high-profile blasphemy case, has shared his views on the life of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in Adiala jail.
Mirza told a private TV channel that while Khan does not enjoy luxurious “palace-like” conditions, he still has access to information and updates from the outside world. The former prime minister reportedly receives two newspapers daily and has an LED television in his cell, allowing him to stay informed of national and international developments.
According to Mirza, Khan seemed very frustrated during his time in prison – a reaction considered understandable after spending almost two years behind bars. Khan was allocated six barracks, five for his personal use and one for his attendant. He would have left his barracks twice a day to eat his meals: breakfast at 9 a.m. and lunch at 3 p.m. The attendant prepares meals with desi ghee, the aroma of which spreads throughout the prison, Mirza noted.
The scholar also described Khan as being expressive in moments of anger, speaking loudly and continuously, which attracted the attention of fellow inmates. These revelations have reignited discussions on the conditions and privileges of the PTI leader in Adiala prison.
Mirza’s comments follow his own release on bail by the Rawalpindi bench of the Lahore High Court in December 2025. He was released on bail in a case alleging blasphemy, filed by the cybercrime wing of the Federal Investigation Agency, after submitting sureties of Rs 500,000 each.
Meanwhile, the PTI has raised concerns over the treatment of Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in jail. Last month, the party wrote to the Senate president demanding that a parliamentary committee investigate what it calls solitary confinement and the violation of fundamental rights. The letter named senators Ali Zafar, Hamid Khan, Azam Swati and Mishal Azam for the proposed committee.
The party stressed that senators have the power to examine the custody conditions of any citizen, especially a former prime minister and member of the National Assembly. The PTI described the treatment of Khan and his wife as unlawful isolation, highlighting constitutional, legal and humanitarian concerns.
