A former I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here champion has been offered an opportunity to restore her television reputation, with an invitation for a second round in the jungle.
The daughter of ex-British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Carol, has largely remained out of the media spotlight for the past 16 years, following her dismissal from The One Show due to a racist comment.
However, the 72-year-old has now been granted a lifeline by ITV executives, who are banking on viewers’ curiosity about whether she has evolved over the past two decades.
In 2005, Carol was a surprise hit on the fifth series of the ITV programme, winning over viewers with her unique and eccentric personality, ultimately being crowned Queen of the Jungle.
Now, the former journalist and lawyer is hoping to once again sway public opinion, having faced cancellation four years after her jungle victory due to her use of the offensive term “golliwog”.
Carol has committed to the second series of the All Stars version of the show, currently being filmed in South Africa. The previous series, which aired in 2023, saw Myleene Klass take home the inaugural “legend” crown, reports the Mirror.
An insider told the Mirror: “Carol was a revelation when she went into the jungle in 2005. Being the posh, boarding-school educated daughter of Margaret Thatcher meant there were many who thought she’d quickly crash and burn.
“But nothing fazed her, she became great friends with everyone and she didn’t flinch from the challenges, which earned her a lot of respect. The time has come to see if Carol has still got what it takes.”
Carol built upon her I’m a Celebrity triumph by broadening her television work and secured a role with the BBC in 2006 as a roving correspondent on The One Show. Her career nosedived in 2009 following backstage conversations where she was overheard by multiple witnesses using the term “golliwog” to describe a mixed-race French tennis player.
Among those who heard her comments were presenter Adrian Chiles and comedian Jo Brand, who appeared as a guest that evening. The BBC axed Carol immediately and she has remained largely absent from the spotlight ever since.
