Chief Executive John Lee addresses newly elected lawmakers at their first chamber meeting since assuming their posts. Chief Executive John Lee has pledged to “get to the bottom” of the deadly Tai Po blaze and hold anyone responsible accountable, while promising to formulate long-term accommodation arrangements for those affected as soon as possible.

Addressing the legislature on Wednesday, the city’s leader said post-disaster relief work is a “pressing task”, with the government moving a motion on support in the fire’s aftermath at the first chamber meeting.

“The government will finalise the long-term accommodation plan for affected families as soon as possible, so as to settle them in their new homes soon,” Lee told newly elected lawmakers.

He said those responsible for the tragedy would be held accountable regardless of their background.

“Law enforcement authorities and the independent committee will leave no stones unturned, and I will get to the bottom of this matter,” Lee said.

“For those who should be held responsible, whether they are civil servants or not and regardless of their levels, they will be held liable according to the facts.”

The chief executive also outlined his expectations for the new batch of lawmakers, including their comments on government policies and measures.

“I will be pleased to listen to your views, whether you agree with the government or not,” Lee said.

“When you disagree with government policies, please point out the issues and raise recommendations and suggestions. We will consider your suggestions seriously. When we are doing right, please be fair with us.”

Lawmakers should speak the facts and filter out misinformation when addressing members of the public, he added.
