The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Department of Health Research (DHR) held nationwide open days to encourage students to pursue careers in biomedical research on Friday and Saturday. The programme, called S.H.I.N.E. – Science, Health and Innovation for Nextgen Explorers – was hosted at research institutes across the country.
The event witnessed participation from 13,150 students in grades 9-12 from over 300 schools across 39 districts in 16 states and union territories at various ICMR institutes.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, DHR & Director General, ICMR stated, “This is a unique initiative of ICMR to ignite scientific curiosity, foster innovation and inspire the next generation of health researchers.”
He emphasized the importance of scientific temper, innovation, and youth engagement in shaping the future of Indian research and healthcare.
“Today is not just a visit, it’s an invitation to step into the shoes of a scientist,” Bahl said while addressing the students.
He urged the students to observe and ask questions to the scientists working in the labs and know more about the scientific strides India has made in medical and health research.
Bahl urged students to observe the scientists at work, ask questions, and learn about India’s advances in medical and health research. The programme featured guided laboratory tours, research exhibitions, poster walks, video presentations, and live demonstrations of ongoing projects.
Students interacted with ICMR scientists, gaining insights into their career paths, areas of expertise, and daily work in public health. A tiger mascot named Dr. Curio, dressed in a lab coat, served as a friendly guide to make the day more engaging for participants.
