Latvian Startups Compete for €10,000 Prize at Icebreakers’26 Festival
Budding entrepreneurs in Latvia will have the opportunity to secure €10,000 in funding at the Icebreakers’26 business opportunity festival, set to take place on at the University of Latvia’s (UL) House of Science in Torņakalns.
The festival, organized by Labs of Latvia, aims to foster entrepreneurship among students and other stakeholders by providing inspiration, knowledge, and practical tools. According to Enno Ence, Vice-Rector for Development at the University of Latvia, the event is designed to bridge the gap between academia, the business sector, and public institutions.
“Our goal is not only to generate new ideas and knowledge, but to help to turn them into practical solutions that benefit society,” Ence said. “Innovation is valuable when it has a long-term impact and can attract both investors and industry partners. So we’re creating an environment where students, researchers, and entrepreneurs work closely together, enabling ideas to evolve into sustainable startups more quickly and shaping the next generation of innovators.”
Icebreakers’26 will center around the theme “Change the Rules of the Game,” encouraging participants to think and act boldly to create innovations. The festival program will feature inspiring stories, panel discussions with industry leaders, and insights into technology, innovation, and business development. Attendees will also learn how to build interdisciplinary teams and leverage resources from various cooperation partners.
The core of the festival will be a business idea competition, where participants will vie for the €10,000 grant to support the development of their ventures. The festival also aims to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to discover new talent and promising ideas.
This year’s festival will focus on information and communication technologies, examining them within a broader business and innovation context. Participants will have access to an exhibition area showcasing companies and solutions, practical workshops, and masterclasses designed to refine ideas, and skills. A dedicated networking point will facilitate the formation of new teams and collaborations, and guided tours of UL’s OpenLab will provide access to infrastructure for testing and implementing ideas.
Participation in the festival and the idea competition is free of charge, but prior registration is required. Interested individuals can find more details at https://icebreakers.lu.lv/.
