Juliet planned to travel with her boyfriend, now her ex. They both agreed to sell her brother’s land to sponsor the trip. Unknown to Juliet, the man had a hidden agenda. Trusting him completely and suspecting no foul play, she transferred the money into his account to serve as proof of funds. Immediately the money landed in his account, he disappeared with it. The betrayal left Juliet devastated and heartbroken. Now, she is determined to seek justice and has vowed that he would not go unpunished.
“My brother, who lives in Germany, asked me to buy a piece of land on his behalf. I helped him purchase the land, and all the documents were with me. My ex knew about the land. When we later planned to travel to the UK, he suggested that I sell the land to sponsor the trip. He assured me that once we got there and started working, we would be able to replace the land within six months. I agreed because I believed it was a good idea and saw how desperate he was for us to travel. I sold the land and we used the money for the travel process. He introduced a man he claimed was handling our travel arrangements, who said he needed N9 million to process the trip for both of us. I had already deposited N2 million. When it was time to show proof of funds, I was asked to transfer money into my ex’s account after printing my own account statement. I transferred N6 million into his account. Immediately he received the money, he left for his house. Sometimes he stayed at my place. The arrangement was that he would print his own account statement and then transfer the money back to me. After some time, I did not hear from him. I called him and he answered, but the background noise sounded like he was fighting with someone. I became worried. Later, his phone was switched off. That was how he disappeared with the money. I have not heard from him since. When I spoke to one of his friends, I was told he is now in Kenya.
“Now I do not know how to tell my brother about the land, especially as he would be coming home soon. I am deeply depressed and heartbroken. This was someone I trusted completely. We were together for two years, and I truly believed I knew him well. During the period we were planning to travel, we even did a court marriage; we were practically married. I never imagined he had another agenda. I later discovered that the so-called travel agent was fake and that both of them worked together. Because of the trust I had in him, I never doubted or cross-checked any of the information he gave me. I left everything for him to handle, believing I was with someone who genuinely had my best interests at heart. He will not go scot-free. I am determined to pursue justice, no matter how long it takes.”
Dear Juliet, the deed has been done, and by now you should have learned a lesson. I think your focus should be on what to tell your brother about the land you sold, or finding a way to replace it. Do not allow this situation to weigh you down too much. Life happens, and you are not the only person this has happened to. What is most important now is to learn from the experience. Please, do not take steps that could deepen your pain, such as seeking revenge. I do not know what you are planning, but be mindful that negative actions often lead to negative consequences. I would advise you to report the matter to the appropriate authorities. Once the police become involved, they may be able to trace him or reach out to his family, which could lead to the recovery of the money. Also, ensure you have all the necessary evidence to prove that you transferred the money to him.
